VIDEO: Senators Shapiro, Nelson, Patrick, Fraser, and Huffman Announce Public Education Funding Recommendations

March 23, 2011

AUSTIN, TEXAS - State Senator Florence Shapiro (R-District 8) and many other Senate colleagues today held a press conference to announce public education funding recommendations brought by the Senate Subcommittee on Public Education Funding.

"Our subcommittee has worked very hard and diligently in coming up with these recommendations," Shapiro said.  "If fully implemented, we believe these recommendations will result in a major restoration of funding for the public education budget."

The Subcommittee on Public Education will make a presentation of their findings to the full Senate Finance Committee on Thursday, March 24."

Every member of this subcommittee recognizes the fact that funding for public education is the number one priority of the budget for this legislative session," Shapiro added.  "These recommendations attempt to focus any budget cuts on the non-classroom portion of the budget and protecting the classroom."

Approximately $9 billion was cut from public education funding when the base budget was released at the beginning of the session.  Shapiro's subcommittee has been charged with the responsibility of conducting a systematic review of all public education funding and making recommendations to the full Senate Finance Committee.

"I believe I speak for the entire Senate when I say we will protect the classroom first," Shapiro concluded.  "This means we will do everything in our power to reduce harmful budget cuts that affect teachers, instructional materials and, most important, the school children of Texas."
